After several years of promises, Elon Musk’s electric car company quietly delisted the entry-level, single-motor spec of the Cybertruck. Prices for the awkward EV now start from $79,990 for a dual-motor variant.
The RWD version had cost $10,000 less than that, but it also came with other drawbacks. For example, it didn’t have a rear passenger display and made do with a simple textile upholstery in the cabin instead of leather. It also shipped with a rather basic 7-speaker audio system while all other trims received a premium 15-speaker setup and lacked any power sockets on board to plug appliances into.
This, plus the fact that it ran on a single motor instead of two or three like all other versions, must have spelled its demise. Teslarati speculates that buyers went for more expensive alternatives because they perceived them to be better in terms of the features-to-price ratio.
On the other hand, it’s hard to neglect that many would-be buyers of the pickup said they were ready to grab one at the initially promised MSRP of $40,000, or at least $50,000 with some basic options. Elon Musk never managed to attain that price point.
