Body-on-frame Toyota Innova Crysta comes back to India

Toyota introduced the third generation of its Innova Hycross in India last fall (see video), but the Crysta version of the minivan is now officially back on sale after a few months of non-production. Didn’t it retire for good?

The answer is quite simple, actually. Despite the marketing positioning the next-gen Innova as a logical evolutionary replacement of the old model, this was not quite true for many drivers. The new Hycross runs on gasoline alone, has its drive firmly affixed to the front axle and features a unibody construction. In contrast, the old Crysta was a capable off-roader with three seat rows and a sturdy body-on-frame design. So the company brought it back to sell alongside the Hycross.

The second generation of the Crysta comes packing a 2.4-liter turbo diesel with 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) going to the rear wheels through a manual gearbox. You can choose between 7 and 8 seats and opt for such modern niceties as seven airbags, a two-zone climate control system, imitation leather trim, driver’s seat power adjustments and more.
