Car Tuning

Mid-engined, topless Toyota GT86 replica on sale for $15k

Someone in Japan converted a mundane 2000 Toyota MR-S Spyder into a modern GT86 lookalike, minus the roof. The result looks fairly authentic thanks to all the OEM parts used and is up for grabs for 2.2 million JPY, which converts into 15,100 USD.

The tuner behind the build sourced the front and the rear bumper from a first-generation GR86. He did the same with the headlights and taillights, but replaced the internals with LEDs in the process. He put 18-inch Works alloy wheels in the arches and painted the whole car in a shade of red borrowed straight from the Ferrari catalogue. Even so, he had to fabricate a number of custom GFRP components to make things fit – the hood cover, the fenders, the side sills and the rear engine deck.

Speaking of the engine, it is a stock 1.8-liter non-turbo four-pot that fits within the wheelbase of this MR-S Spyder. It delivers 140 PS (138 hp / 103 kW) along with 171 Nm (126 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

The proportions are off in a number of places, but other than that, the exterior looks just fine. If we had to nitpick, we’d point to the apparent lack of cooling. The MR-S normally relies on multiple air vents in its deck lid and bumper, which were apparently removed here. All ventilation the engine receives comes from two small intakes added next to the rear fenders. Are they enough? That’s anyone’s guess, and a valid concern for any prospective buyers.

Yahoo Japan will accept best offers through next Saturday, May 31.
