Toyota is already getting the new generation of Supra ready to rumble, BestCarWeb reports quoting unofficial sources. According to the alleged leak, the company had originally planned to release it as an all-electric sports car with no further options, but the management has since changed its mind. The launch remains penciled in for 2025.
According to these inside sources, the Japanese automaker once again works together with BMW on the Supra project. Like before, the car may wind up with an inline six-cylinder petrol engine in its main spec. Of course, like the BMW XM and others before it, it may be partly electrified.
As for the all-electric version, there is still no new information. Toyota may either borrow the powertrain from BMW or use one of its own design. The Japanese company had mentioned before that it wanted to release a compact battery sports car in 2026 or later that would resemble the recently introduced FT-Se Concept.
The current generation (shown below) will be sent to retirement with the launch of the new flagship spec called Supra GRMN. Insiders claim that the car will continue to rely on its usual I6 turbo, but the power output will be dialed up to 550 PS (542 hp / 405 kW). Earlier reports said Toyota would just transfer the BMW M4 CSL engine into the Supra GRMN, limiting the production run to a few hundred units worldwide.
The GRMN is expected to debut sometime in 2024, the next-generation Supra ICE car in 2025, and the Supra EV a year after that.
