Volkswagen gets rid of Ameo after 4 years of production

Low demand has led to Volkswagen AG discontinuing its compact sedan Ameo in India, and it looks like there will be no successor.

The car has emerged in India in 2016 and was never meant to be exported to other countries. It came based on the old-gen Polo hatchback platform fitted with a separate trunk case and otherwise shortened to under four meters long to be eligible for a tax deduction.

The model initially shipped with a 1.5-liter turbo diesel and a 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, and a 1.0-liter petrol option was added later on. Five-speed manual was the only transmission available in all versions, while the diesel one was obtainable with an optional DSG box.

In addition to the Ameo never quite becoming popular among buyers, it simply ceased to meet the environmental standards when India switched to BS6 in 2020. Rather than sinking money into making it compliant, VW chose to retire the model permanently.
