Volkswagen is planning on releasing a new fully electric SUV it calls the ID. Tiguan, Handelsblatt reports quoting a representative of the company.
The new Tiguan will have nothing in common with its namesake in the drivetrain and tech department. The next generation of the ICE car will allegedly be based on an improved version of the MEB platform, while the EV will run on MEB+ underpinnings. The Plus version of the architecture will reportedly come with new battery tech for faster charging.
It remains uncertain how the brand will position the ID. Tiguan in its portfolio, where such electric SUVs as the ID.4 and ID.5 already exist. According to Handelsblatt, the company rep emphasized the Wolfsburg factory needed a new battery-powered SUV to replace the Golf, which has been performing worse from year to year.
