VW Amarok cosplays a track runner Down Under, forgets performance

Volkswagen Australia has again teamed up with Walkinshaw to produce a sportier-looking variant of a production car. The choice fell on the latest Amarok this time around, landing it with suspension upgrades and extra aero, but no modifications in the standard turbo diesel powertrain.

On the outside, you can recognize the new W600 by its redesigned front fascia complete with a new bumper, a honeycomb grille, larger air intakes, and a revised skid plate. Arches were widened all around to accommodate 20-inch alloy wheels shod in Michelin performance rubber. Power-assisted running boards, a sports bar above the bed and new dual tailpipes rounded off the exterior styling.

Inside, the Walkinshaw logo can be found on the seats, the floor mats and the new aluminum pedals. The trim level is quite high, with 10-way-adjustable front seats, eight-speaker audio and a 12-inch infotainment display all listed under standard equipment. A power-assisted bed cover is available as an option.

Like we said, the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine stays the same, outputting its usual 250 PS (247 hp / 184 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels. However, Walkinshaw overhauls the suspension with Koni components, a rear anti-sway bar, and multiple steering tweaks for a sportier driving feel.

Sales will start in August. There has been no mention of the pricing yet.
