3rd-gen Mazda CX-5 bows in Europe

The third generation of Mazda’s CX-5 crossover is finally here, but it won’t go on sale until the beginning of 2026.

The company did everything it could to keep the model recognizable, so most exterior modifications are cosmetic. There are revised bumpers, a new radiator grille, new headlights and subtly tweaked c-pillars with longer rear doors, but that’s about all.

The European version of the CX-5 is 4,690 mm (183.2 inches) long, 1,860 mm (72.7 inches) wide and 1,695 mm (66.2 inches) tall. That’s 115 mm (4.5 inches) longer than the second generation. The wheelbase is also 76 mm (3 inches) longer, and the extra interior space goes into rear row legroom and trunk space, according to Mazda.

The interior is almost devoid of physical buttons now, but at least it retains the transmission lever on the tunnel. Top trims now come equipped with a 15.6-inch head unit – the largest on record, Mazda says. Cheaper versions make do with a 12.9-inch touchscreen. The dashboard is digital and has 10.25 inches of diagonal size regardless of the spec. Last but not least, the company mentions “more comfortable” seats.

Customers in Europe will be able to buy the new CX-5 with a 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G engine assisted by a 24V motor for 141 PS (139 hp / 104 kW) and 238 Nm (176 lb-ft) of torque. The only transmission on offer is six-speed automatic, but you can choose between FWD and AWD. Mazda emphasizes that all powertrains will be market-specific. Rumor has it the United States version will output 190 PS (187 hp / 140 kW) to all four wheels.

This and many other things remain to be confirmed, though. After the CX-5 goes on sale in early 2026, Mazda says it will work on releasing a next-gen hybrid variant of it based on Skyactiv Z technology. This SUV will combine superior power and torque with enhanced fuel economy, but it won’t arrive until 2027.
