Audi opens preorders for A6 & Q5 TDI featuring a new engine and charger

Audi is already taking orders for the new Q5 and A6 models equipped with the company’s latest and most technologically advanced diesel V6. Both are mild hybrids, but can be driven in all-electric mode for easier parking or low-speed maneuvering.

The new powertrain centers on a 3.0-liter V6 tuned to deliver 299 PS (295 hp / 220 kW) and up to 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque. A starter-generator briefly contributes its own 24 PS (24 hp / 18 kW) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque when needed, assisting the engine in traffic jams and during the initial startup. An unspecified battery pack charges itself via regenerative braking.

An electric supercharger is arguably the biggest highlight of these new Audis. Taking advantage of smart ECUs on board, it remains functional throughout the entire RPM range and completely eliminates any turbo lag that would be otherwise present, the company claims. It spins into action 40% faster than Audi’s earlier designs and has drivers covered with heaps of instant torque from the start.

Fuel economy averages out at roughly 5.5 liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers. That’s 42.7 MPG for our U.S.-based readers and 51.4 MPG for the UK. The throttle response is simultaneously sharper and smoother, Audi says, and the driving comfort is about as good as it gets with this powertrain type.

Full prices are pending.
