A new draft law has been passed in the United States that puts restrictions on vehicle imports with Internet on board and any hardware or software developed in Russia or China.
The U.S. Government has previously voiced concerns about the national security and cybersecurity risks presented by foreign IT solutions in cars. The restrictions on software are now scheduled to enter into force in 2027, with an import ban on cars and computing hardware set to follow in 2030.
The law currently doesn’t apply to vehicles weighing over 10,000 lbs (4,536 kilos). However, it may be extended later to include them. This could spell trouble for Chinese companied like BYD, which assembles all-electric buses in California.
