China develops an affordable SUV EV with lifetime warranty and maintenance

Automotive startup Hengchi has revealed the pricing behind its first production car, the Hengchi 5. The crossover SUV will start from 179,000 Yuan ($26,700 USD) and come bundled with a few useful services.

This includes a lifetime warranty for the entire car, including its most expensive element – the traction battery. Two yearly maintenance checks are also part of the deal.

Furthermore, buyers get a free home charging device with free installation, lifetime road assistance and five years of Internet access.

If you are wondering at this time where all this generosity is coming from (we know we would), then consider the fact that Hengchi is an Evergrande brand. Evergrande is a notably ill-reputed Chinese corporation and a major debtor. As appealing as the offer sounds, perhaps you would be wise to wait and observe before committing to this purchase.

The Hengchi 5 is 4,725 x 1,925 x 1,676 mm large L/W/H with 2,780 mm of wheelbase, making it a mid-size SUV. Its electric motor drives the front axle with 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 345 Nm (254 lb-ft) of torque. Accelerating to 100 km/h takes 7.8 seconds. A LiFePo4 battery on board can hold up to 72.8 kilowatt-hours of power, giving the car 602 kilometers (375 miles) of CLTS-rated range.

A look inside reveals two 10.2-inch displays for the driver and the front passenger merged under a single pane of glass. There is also a 14.6-inch infotainment unit, which runs on Baidu OS and supports 5G.
