Chinese EV outsells Tesla worldwide

The tiny Wuling Hongguang Mini EV found around 61,500 buyers in October, while Elon Musk’s bestselling SUV unexpectedly landed on the second spot with 53,300 units sold.

Geely Geome Xingyuan rounded off the top-3 list with 44,200 examples sold in China and abroad in October. CleanTechnica, which has published this data, points out that the vast majority of brands that landed on places from 4th to 10th are owned by BYD Company Ltd. The only exception is the Xiaomi YU7 crossover at the 7th place with 33,662 units sold.

To be fair, it must be noted that the year-to-date sales dynamics still favor Tesla. The company has moved 841,300 EVs from January to October, while its nearest competitor – the BYD Seal U – fell just a little bit short of 500,000 units over the same period. The difference becomes even bigger if you consider that BYD counts its NEVs (“new energy vehicles”) by lumping battery-electric and hybrid cars together, inflating numbers.

In terms of trends, EV sales kept growing in Turkey, Vietnam, India and select European countries in October. Demand slowed down in the United States and China.
