Ferrari’s ultimate 296 GTB spied testing on public roads

According to Motor1, the photographer who snapped these pics of an extreme Ferrari 296 GTB prototype concluded it was a limited edition called Challenge Stradale.

The car does look like a purebred racer, number plate niches in both bumpers suggest that it’s supposed to be street-legal. It’s further supported by the fact that it was sighted on a regular road in Italy and not a closed test circuit. In other words, what we ar dealing with here is most likely a strictly limited special edition.

Compared to the standard 296 GTB model, the alleged Challenge Stradale rocks a markedly different aero package complete with a giant rear wing. Just what kind of powertrain it has remains a mystery, but we suppose Ferrari will want to ditch the original’s 880-PS (868-hp / 647-kW) hybrid system in favor of a lightweight non-electrified engine. The track-only variant of the 296 GTB extracts 690 PS (681 hp / 507 kW) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) out of such an engine, so we expect something similar here as well.

The premiere will likely take place later this year, with prices starting upwards of $500,000.
