Chasing the Storm: Jay Leno tries out a Tornado Hunter vehicle

It is common knowledge and also common sense that police officers need fast cars to chase down criminals. Likewise, hospitals need well-equipped and well-staffed ambulance cars. But what would a meteorologist use if their ambition were to peek inside a raging tornado? Apparently, a Ford Super Duty not unlike this one.

The car goes by the name Dominator 3 and belongs to Reed Timmer, an expert meteorologist. Just where the supposed Dominators number one and two went remains unspoken, but as one can imagine, surviving in the eye of the storm can be challenging for seconds on end – much harder if you need to stay inside and collect research data.

The massive truck boasts ballistic steel protection with polyethylene/Kevlar padding and is meant to withstand being bombarded by debris slamming into it with bullet-like energies. Powering the grim fortress is a 6.7-liter PowerStroke V8 rated at 400 hp (298 kW) and 1,085 Nm (800 lb-ft) of torque.

The one feature we would like to highlight specifically is the air suspension. Apparently, comfort has nothing to do with it: the truck has to be capable of dropping itself down and getting rid of the air under the bottom whenever the tornado strikes – or risk getting flipped over. As you may understand, no other suspension type can accomplish that within seconds.

Watch the full video, you will be in for quite a memorable ride!
