GAC has designed a proprietary plug-in hybrid powertrain for its upcoming E-Series lineup of cars. The first entry on the list is the GAC Trumpchi E9 seen here.
Rather than being all-new like the company claims, the model shares its chassis, interior layout and wheelbase with the minivan known as the Trumpchi M8. Even the exteriors look alike, although the buyers are offered some individuality in the top trim level.
The hybrid system supports two main modes of operation. Normally, the front wheels are driven by an electric motor rated at 182 PS (180 hp / 134 kW) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft), while the petrol engine functions as a power generator for the battery on board. In the second mode, the engine gets coupled with the wheels to assist the e-motor for a combined output of 373 PS (368 hp / 274 kW) and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft). In all-electric mode, the MPV has 106 km (66 miles) of driving range according to the European standard.
