Hyundai pulls the original Ioniq out of production

The Hyundai Ioniq was among the world’s first cars to go on sale with as many as three electrified powertrains to choose from, including one full-electric. Now, however, the manufacturer has apparently decided to discontinue the model.

We are getting reports that the company will be stopping production in Ulsan next month, with the Ioniq already sold out and unavailable for ordering at many authorized dealerships in many countries.

The original model came based on the same Kia Niro chassis. The two hybrids utilized a 1.6-liter gasoline engine, while the all-electric vehicle packed a single motor rated at 120 PS (118 hp / 88 kW) and a traction battery with 28 kWh of power capacity. A mid-life refresh saw the battery expand to 38.3 kilowatt-hours.

The new Ioniq 5 is set to replace the original Ioniq soon, with the Ioniq 6 sedan and the Ioniq 7 SUV scheduled to arrive next.
