Fox Factory has obtained an official permission from Jeep to produce a special edition of the long-wheelbase Wrangler SUV. Known as the Commando, it features a modified body and chassis and will be sold exclusively to U.S. war veterans and active military officers. It costs less than the stock Wrangler 392, but applicants will have to write a letter to the company justifying their purchase.
Only 250 units are planned for production. Working with a modern Wrangler Rubicon, Fox Factory managed to boost its V8 engine output from the stock 477 PS (470 hp / 351 kW) to 715 PS (705 hp / 526 kW). This isn’t mandatory; those who are fine with driving a naturally aspirated Wrangler may leave things as is, while the supercharger is a $11,495 option.
Elsewhere, the SUV can be optioned with a Magnaflow exhaust and a Warn winch priced at $3,395 each. Suspension upgrades including Fox 3.0 remote-reservoir shocks and a custom sway bar come included as standard, giving the special edition 90 mm (3.5 inches) of extra ground clearance. The same goes for stainless-steel fender flares, 17-inch beadlock-protected wheels and 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires.
On the outside, the army-themed Wrangler is immediately recognizable thanks to Mopar bumpers, tube-frame doors and a soft top, although the company bundles the OEM doors and roof with the purchase as well. All 250 examples come finished in an olive-green shade with some military graphics all around and feature exterior-matching leather trim in the cabins.
Despite the extensive scope of changes, the SUV starts from a low $69,995, undercutting the base price of the Wrangler V8 even before any Rubicon options. Only one example will be sold at a public auction, while the remaining 249 will be offered to the veterans and currently serving officers as mentioned above. Since the demand is expected to be higher than the supply, buyers will be asked to explain in writing why they feel they deserve the off-roader.
