A Lamborghini LM002 will cross the auction block in Miami in a month. Designed by the supercar maker back in the 1980s, the uncanny SUV/pickup bears the number 279 on its chassis and has 8,900 kilometers (5,530 miles) on its odometer. The seller claims it has been barely used over the past eight years.
Four decades ago, the company came up with a concept car named Cheetah that it hoped to sell to the U.S. Army, but the military command found its rear-engine design too unconventional to adopt. Lamborghini decided to see the project through anyway and came up with a limited-run production SUV named the LM002.
The first production vehicle debuted in 1986 after nine years of development (see video). It came equipped with the same 5.2-liter V12 as the Countach, rated at 450 PS (444 hp / 331 kW).
The carmaker had primarily targeted its Middle Eastern clientele with the LM002, but the truck found popularity overseas as well. In the United States, it was nicknamed Rambo Lambo following the rumor that Sylvester Stallone was among the first buyers.
This particular vehicle rolled off the assembly line in June 1991. Its current owner, a collector from Kuwait, bought it eight years ago and reportedly drove it for 56 kilometers (35 miles). The vehicle is said to be in excellent condition and poised to fetch a small fortune.
