Land Rover Discovery nearly doubles its output thanks to tuners

U.S.-based tuning company Legacy Overland took delivery of a third-generation Land Rover Discovery (LR3) and swapped its infamously failure-prone engine for a time-proven LS3 V8.

In the United States, the Discovery makes do with 304 PS (300 hp / 224 kW), so this was quite the upgrade. The tuner didn’t bother supercharging the engine, but it did increase its displacement volume from the original 6.2 to 6.8 liters. Along with other improvements, it bumped up the output to a cool 558 PS (550 hp / 410 kW) and 745 Nm (550 lb-ft) of torque. A thoroughly tuned GM 6L80 automatic gearbox was entrusted with conveying the momentum to the wheels.

Further modifications included new driveshafts, some structural reinforcements, rebuilt suspension and a performance brake system complete with new pads. To stay viable for long wilderness trips, the Discovery got a Warn winch and an expedition rack with an access ladder.

The interior layout stayed the same, but Legacy Overland replaced the gauges and upgraded the infotainment system with a new touchscreen display. The seats were also retrimmed and a new audio system was installed.
