Contrary to some reports, Mazda apparently still plans to greenlight the next generation of Mazda6 into production, although it will be based on a new RWD platform and an inline six-cylinder engine, Best Car Web is reporting from Japan. The development of the car has allegedly already begun, with the market launch penciled in for 2025.
Rumors that a similar successor will be coming to the Mazda6 lineup have ben circulating since 2017, but this is the first time we are hearing insider specifics. If the info is to be trusted, then the new Mazda6 will get a ‘four-door coupe’ body with a slanted roof. Other than that, its design will not be revolutionary in any respect, instead just building upon the company’s current Kodo philosophy. It sounds like the model will look similar to the Vision Coupe Concept, which you will find in the gallery and the video here.
As far as the powertrain options are concerned, we would expect four- and six-cylinder engines, some of them hybridized. The sales geography will likely be limited to Japan and the United States.
