Paul McCartney’s Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL Lorinser goes under the hammer

The Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL tuned by Lorinser and purchased by Paul McCartney’s company back in 1985 to be sold to a prince in Saudi Arabia four years later was auctioned off in Great Britain earlier this week, fetching the equivalent of U.S. $38,500.

The car’s latest owner bought it twelve years ago and spent two years restoring it to peak condition. He replaced the entire flooring and side sills, and disassembled and cleaned the stock five-liter V8. While he was at it, he had the S-Class fitted with a reversing camera, a suspension lowering kit and Lorinser aftermarket details. You may watch the video for a demonstration of a similar kit.

He also swapped the old speakers installed by the musician out for modern ones, adding a powerful amp, and has driven the car for 1,130 kilometers (700 miles) since then.

Macca’s rides are not of any particular interest to car collectors at large, hence the relatively low $38,500 selling price.
