New Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 got caught on camera

The development of the new Mercedes CLE-Class is in full swing, and YouTuber Carspotter Jeroen gives us the first look at the live car and its dynamics.

The CLE coupe was filmed being tested rather aggressively on the Nürburgring. As one would expect from an AMG, the prototype was sharp and fast. What confused us a fair bit, however, was the engine sound. Quad-pipe AMG exhausts usually reproduce a clean V8 soundtrack, but this one sounded like it had a half of that cylinder count.

Of course, this is most likely the case, too. The AMG CLE 63 is universally expected to come based on the same hybrid powertrain as the Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance, using a turbocharged four-pot and a single electric motor for 680 PS (671 hp / 500 kW) and 865 Nm (638 lb-ft) total.

This particular prototype was likely the range-topping AMG model – note the Panamericana grille and the square exhaust finishers. The camo still prevents us from seeing smaller details, while fake bodywork at the front end conceals the lower apron.

The full reveal is expected to take place before the end of the year.
