Mitsuoka updates its Bentley/Jaguar lookalike

Mitsuoka, a Japanese car company renowned for its charming retro conversions, has facelifted its Ryugi model lineup. The sedan and the wagon are both based on Corolla chassis and cost a rough equivalent of 20,000 USD to make in Japan.

The biggest improvement, arguably, is the widened list of available options. Among other things, customers can now go for front and rear parking sensors (not included in the base spec) and a more modern, dimmable rearview mirror.

On the outside, the car does its best to mimic the British classics of the mid-20th century, like the Bentley S1 or the Jaguar Mk2. The interior stays nearly unchanged except for the occasional Mitsuoka logo. The base car for the conversion is a 2012 Toyota Corolla (either Axio or Fielder trim), and the powertrain is stock.

This means the car has 1.5 liters of non-turbo displacement and sends 109 PS (108 hp / 81 kW) and 138 Nm (102 lb-ft) of torque to the front wheels through a manual transmission. If you opt for the CVT instead, you can get AWD. Lastly, there’s an opportunity to go hybrid with the same engine dialed down to 74 PS (73 hp / 54 kW) and an electric motor adding 61 PS (60 hp / 45 kW) and 169 Nm (125 lb-ft) of its own.
