Moke returns to the States with an electric take on the Moke

Moke International is coming to the North American market with the Californian, a modern electric interpretation of the Mini Moke, an iconic car made by British Motor Corporation.

The original Mini Moke was converted from a military vehicle and quickly gained popularity in Great Britain. It was then exported to other countries and eventually overseas. The last example was sold in the United States in 1982. With the Californian, Moke International plans to resurrect the iconic car using modern technology.

The newcomer is street-legal and equipped with a single electric motor driving the rear axle with 45 PS (44 hp / 33 kW). The company says that the sprint from zero to 55 km/h (34 mph) takes 4.3 seconds. While technically street-legal, the EV maxes out at 80 km/h (50 mph) and only has enough battery juice for 120 km (70 miles) of driving range. On the upside, it supports fast charging.

Moke International believes the Californian packs enough power to be relevant in U.S. urban areas. The prices are pending.
