Nissan reveals an extreme X-Trail off-roader concept

Nissan has previewed its X-Trail Crawler design study that it will be bringing to the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, Autocar Japan reports with photos of the car. It off-road capabilities have been greatly improved primarily thanks to suspension mods, but there are a few bold aesthetic touches in the mix as well.

New springs, shock absorbers and 17-inch wheels shod in grippy high-profile tires add up to 130 mm (5 inches) of extra ground clearance. The track has also been widened for stability.

The wheel arches have been reworked and amended with matte plastic fenders. Elsewhere, the X-Trail received overhauled bumpers, an extra LED panel, skid plates and towing eyes. Some lighting can be found on the expedition rack, too, and opening the trunk reveals a spare wheel, fire extinguishers and recovery tools for heavy off-roading.

The exterior is finished in a funky combination of pink and green. Autocar Japan believes that the choice of colors is dictated by Nissan’s desire to attract as much attention as possible to the premiere. As for the word ‘Crawler’, it probably means the build has been primarily optimized for rock crawling.

The base vehicle here is a hybrid X-Trail SUV that relies on an extra e-motor at the rear axle for its all-wheel-drive capabilities.
