Rare Automecca Sports Van from half a century ago crops up on sale

Bring a Trailer in the United States is looking for a buyer interested in a rather exotic van running on a Volkswagen Beetle platform. Produced decades before sporty wagons became mainstream, it’s been properly restored and is currently being traded at $30,333 with a day left on the clock.

The Sports Van was originally conceived by Curtis Brubaker and known as the Brubaker Box. The designer only managed to deliver three examples before his company went bankrupt, but Automecca bought out the rights for the vehicle and proceeded to make a couple dozen more. The idea of a bulky “sports van” running on Beetle underpinnings didn’t sit well with most car aficionados back in the ‘70s, so it never rose to any significant acclaim.

In addition to the retro-futuristic custom bodywork, each car ended up with a rather gaudy interior trimmed with red leather and velvet. The Beetle’s stock 1.6-liter four-banger continued its duty under the hood, delivering an unspecified amount of power to the rear wheels through a four-speed AT. The listing doesn’t mention any performance numbers, but points out that this particular example was overhauled four years ago with a fresh exterior paint coat, a new carburetor, aftermarket cylinder heads and some other improvements.

The odometer seems to show 125,000 km (77,688 miles) of use.
