Retro-tastic Ferrari 296 GTS honors a race car from six decades ago

A Ferrari racer with the starting number 124 won the Mugello GP of 1965, and now, Niels van Roij Design is preparing a homage to it using the Ferrari 296 GTS underpinnings.

Aside from a period-correct dark red livery, the car wears hand-painted yellow coat-of-arms motifs on the roll bar, silver brake calipers and matching retro-style wheels. It flaunts large air intakes in the rear fenders and has two symmetrically located ports in the back – a gas tank lid and a charging port. The surrounds of the ports are 3D-printed from carbon fiber, like some other parts.

The interior is awash with vivid blue leather and polished aluminum accents. The steering wheel has a wooden rim, and the running boards are adorned with hand-drawn outlines of the original Ferrari #124. The Netherlands-based tuner claims the styling effort has already taken more than 1,000 work-hours, and it’s still not complete.

We were unable to find any mentions of the powertrain, but it’s not like “stock Ferrari” sounds bad in any case. Niels van Roij is a known expert in Prancing Horse tuning, his previous work being a Targa conversion of a Ferrari Testarossa (see video).
