China putting yet another battery truck on the roads

SAIC-owned car brand Maxus is getting ready to release a new all-electric pickup truck on the domestic market. Dubbed the Interstellar, it will kick off an entire sub-brand when it gets revealed on July 3rd.

Per AutoHome.cn, the actual production car will not reach the showrooms until early 2024, though. It is expected to be based heavily on the GST Concept introduced at the Auto Shanghai show (check out the gallery and the video below for more info).

In the meantime, the company has already registered the design in China’s Ministry of Industry database. The patent states that the standard spec is 5,365 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,792 mm tall with 3,155 mm between the axles. A larger version, 5,680 mm long with 3,470 mm between the axles, will be heading to the market at a later date. Ultimately, there will be three pickups in the Interstellar family to choose from.

Maxus promises a body-on-frame design and up to 1,000 horsepower (750 kilowatts) coming to the wheels from four electric motors. In addition to supercar levels of performance, the Interstellar will be the world’s first vehicle to take advantage of an ‘intelligent engine and suspension control system’. What it means specifically remains a mystery at this point.

Rumor has it the truck will also benefit from next-gen batteries sufficient for 1,000 km (621 miles) of driving range or more – at least, according to the Chinese national standard. The pricing is another total unknown.
