Volkswagen XL1 has record-low fuel consumption, goes up on sale in England

The Volkswagen XL1 counts among the world’s most economical cars to ever reach production. One of these will be auctioned off in Birmingham, England on November 10, 2019.

The production run consisted of just 250 cars, 200 of which made it into retail, while the remaining 50 were reserved by the manufacturer. This particular example rolled off the lines in 2015 and has only 127 kilometers (79 miles) in the odometer. The auction holder hopes to get up to £60,000 out of the deal.

The Volkswagen engineering department had two main goals when designing the XL1: to produce a car that would consume no more than one liter of fuel per 100 kilometers traveled and to make it as lightweight as possible. the company claims it has succeeded in both respects, recording 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed per 100 km (NECD-rated).

The car weighs in at a mere 695 kilograms (1,532 lbs), has a record-low aerodynamic drag ratio of 0.186, and comes powered by a 47hp (35kW) diesel engine assisted by an electric add-on.
