SSC Tuatara debuts with 1,750 HP under the hood

SSC North America showed us the original Tuatara Concept all the way back in 2011, but the production hasn’t started until now.

The first supercar has just rolled off the assembly lines and was revealed during a dedicated show event in Philadelphia. The manufacturer said the production run would be limited to just 100 units.

Called Tuatara after a New Zealand lizard species and designed by famous U.S. automobile designer Jason Castriota, the vehicle comes powered by a 5.9-liter V8 that pushes out around 1,350 hp (1,000 kilowatts) working with the normal gasoline. Pour in E85 instead, and the output shoots through the roof with 1,750 hp (1,305 kW). The transmission is seven-speed DCT, the drive is on the rear axle, and the curb weight does not exceed 2,750 lbs (1,247 kilograms).

Interior packaging includes a multimedia system with a touch-enabled display, a climate control unit, and a premium audio system.

The SSC Ultimate Aero Concept, which the Tuatara is loosely based upon, was the world’s fastest supercar when it debuted, but eventually yielded the title – first to the Bugatti Veyron SS, then the Koenigsegg Agera RS, and finally the Bugatti Chiron SS 300+. In all likelihood, SSC – which is currently owned by Jerod Shelby – will endeavor to reclaim the throne with its latest model.
