Subaru introduced its high-riding Levorg Layback crosswagon in early June, and has now followed it up with a part-electric version promising superior performance. It can already be preordered starting from ¥4,246,000, or $26,400.
Like the technically related Subaru Forester and Crosstrek hybrids, the new Levorg Layback relies on a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, a starter-generator and a dedicated motor for propulsion. The engine delivers 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW) and the motor contributes 120 PS (118 hp / 88 kW) driving all four wheels.
On the outside, the electrified wagon sports a distinct from end complete with new headlights, bumper and radiator grille, and a solid vent-free hood. Buyers can option it with one of the four available styling packs seen in the gallery above. The interior stays largely unchanged from the ICE version.
As far as the equipment goes, Subaru mentions LED lighting all around, 18-inch wheels coming in several designs to choose from, Nappa leather trim, and heating for the steering wheel and the seats. The digital dash display is 12.3 inches large, and the head unit measures 11.6 inches from corner to corner. The brand’s EyeSight ADAS package is included as standard, while a premium Harman Kardon audio system is listed under options.
The more adventurous drivers in Japan will appreciate to know that the Levorg Layback hybrid only has 180 millimeters (7.1 inches) of ground clearance, whereas its gas-powered cousin has 200 mm (7.9 inches). The company claims that it comes with suspension and steering tweaks that should make it no less exciting to drive on poor roads than its significantly less powerful ICE variant.
