Video: Toyota Hilux turns into a true drift monster

The tuners over at Mighty Car Mods took delivery of an unassuming third-generation Toyota Hilux pickup and turned it into a drift machine with the help of a new turbo engine.

When it broke cover in the distant year 1978, the third-gen Hilux came equipped with a modest engine not even capable of 100 PS (99 hp / 74 kW). To mitigate this issue, MCM swapped it to a 2.7-liter, four-cylinder Toyota 2TR mill sourced from a much newer model. In its original naturally aspirated form, the engine produced a healthy 160 PS (158 hp / 118 kW).

Never ones to leave good enough alone, MCM upgraded it with a soirty intercooler, 76mm (3-inch) exhaust pipes, a new driveshaft and a Haltech ECU. Performance brakes and a limited-slip rear differential also came into play at a certain point.

The final power and torque numbers weren’t measured, but you only need to watch the video to realize how capable this almost-half-a-century-old machine is with some tuning. It helps that it looks almost completely stock on the outside, so no one will suspect a thing until you step on the throttle.
