Legacy Overland, a vehicle restoration specialist based in Connecticut, has finished working on a 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60. What used to be a rusty off-roader with a worn interior trim became as new.
Trying for something different this time around, the company decided not to mess with the instantly recognizable appearance of the FJ60 and merely removed all the rust. The result was repainted in the original Freeborn Red. Most of the body kit, including the front bumper with a bull bar and a winch, was preserved as well. A spare wheel holder in the back is perhaps the only aftermarket addition that catches the eye.
But while the bodywork merited saving it, the same could not be said about the Land Cruiser’s antiquated and unreliable engine. As such, it was dumped in favor of a much more robust 6.2-liter LS3 V8 mated to a modern five-speed manual gearbox and Toyota transfer case. Improved air intake, cooling and exhaust should help it pump out more than the stock 435 PS (429 hp / 320 kW), but the tuner never bothered with the dyno measurements.
Chassis was another aspect of the project that desperately needed attention. It ended up with Old Man Emu springs, new suspension bushings, disc brakes at all four corners, and a modernized steering mechanism.
Last but hardly least, the interior received a Pioneer head unit with Apple CarPlay support, a JBL audio system with a Rockford amplifier, and some retro-style Recaro seats. The whole passenger space was retrimmed with leather and eco-suede and lit up with LEDs.
