Toyota launches Crown Sport mild hybrid in Japan

The new Toyota Crown Sport HEV is already obtainable in Japan starting from 5,900,900 Yen. Its plug-in hybrid counterpart is scheduled to arrive in December.

The car rides on large 21-inch wheels and features independent rear suspension along with rear wheel steering. Its powertrain incorporates a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, an electro-mechanical CVT transmission, a single e-motor mounted at the front axle and another, separate e-motor at the rear axle. The resulting system is called E-Four AWD.

There is still no info regarding the power and torque. We do know that the upcoming Crown Sport PHEV has the exact same powertrain layout, just more powerful motors and bigger battery.

An alternative to buying the HEV outright would be renting it on a monthly subscription basis, which costs 66,550 Yen/mo.

Toyota’s next domestic release will be the Crown sedan in November, followed by the range-topping Crown Estate SUV in a month or two.
