Volkswagen Beetle styled as an old sci-fi movie ride goes on sale for $4.5k

A heavily modded Volkswagen Beetle is up for grabs in Connecticut right now for an asking price of $4,500. It has an all-new body kit evoking associations with retro-futurist cars from movies and requires some more work before it can be driven.

The New Beetle donor (see video) came out in 2000, but you will be hard pressed to find it underneath all the mascara. Only the roof and the greenhouse remain recognizable, while the rest of the bodywork has been fabricated specifically for the project. The creator says you can safely remove them at any time.

Other than the bizarre styling, the car sports new 18-inch wheels and a Transformer badge on the hood instead of the standard VW logo.

The interior has been stripped clean of everything except for the seats, the dashboard and the steering wheel. The seller doesn’t go into detail on why it was done and whether any interior work was planned but never carried out.

In its stock form, the New Beetle produced 180 PS (178 hp / 132 kW) and 235 Nm (173 lb-ft) of torque. This particular example has apparently been tuned, but the listing provides no further specifics.
