Next-gen VW Tiguan L bows in China

The third generation of the long-wheelbase Volkswagen Tiguan, which is being made at the VW-SAIC joint factory, has been officially introduced in the country.

The new design iteration is called Tiguan L “Pro” and is 4,735 x 1,842 x 1,682 mm large with 2,791 mm of wheelbase. It is more than 100 mm (4 inches) longer than its European counterpart, but the seat count stays unchanged at five with no other options.

Like on the Old Continent, the Chinese Tiguan L is delivered in two looks to choose from. The “vanilla” version has horizontal slats in the front bumper, while the R-Line spec wears a sportier, more aggressive body kit. The interior layout and composition are largely the same between the two, including the steering wheel, the center tunnel, the 15-inch display and the 10.3-inch digital dashboard. The one aspect in which the Chinese spec pulls forward is a third 11.6-inch display built into dash in front of the front passenger.

Equipment-wise, there is a three-zone HVAC on board, surround-view cameras, a 12-channel Harman/Kardon audio system and front seats offering 12 power adjustments, air vents and massage.

There is only one engine on the list so far – a 2.0-liter four-pot mated to a seven-speed DCT – but you can choose from two configurations. If you are fine with front-wheel-drive, you’ll get 184 PS (181 hp / 135 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. If you want AWD, the powertrain receives a boost to 220 PS (217 hp / 162 kW) and 350 Nm (257 lb-ft).
