Yangwang U9 Xtreme sets record with a sub-7-second North Loop time

Chinese automaker BYD has reported a particular accomplishment of its fully electric hypercar known as the Yangwang U9 Xtreme (U9X). Unleashed on the Nürburgring, it completed the entire 20.8-kilometer (12.9-mile) long track in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds.

In doing so, the electric coupe dethroned the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra and became recognized as the Nordschleife’s fastest production EV. It came roughly six seconds ahead of the Xiaomi and became the world’s first production EV to show a sub-7-minute lap time on the dreaded German track.

As you may remember, Xiaomi claimed a lap time of 6 minutes 22 seconds with its SU7 Ultra a while ago. However, that car was a non-stock prototype. In that category, Volkswagen’s ID.R EV still reigns supreme with 6 minutes and 5.3 seconds. It’s not street-legal, though.

In contrast, the Yangwang U9X is eligible for public roads. It’s still a limited-run model with only 30 examples slated for production for the world. Packing four e-motors, it outputs 3,019 PS (2,978 hp / 2,220 kW) and hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.36 seconds. Prices in China start from 1.8 million Yuan, which converts into U.S. $252,754 as of this writing.

The same car previously became recognized as the fastest street-legal car in production. Racing on the Papenburg track in Germany, it managed to attain a top speed of 496.22 km/h (308.3 mph). The company claims it could do 500 km/h (310 mph) and more given the right conditions.
