Acura MDX Type S gets ready for debut

Acura will unveil its performance-packed MDX Type S during the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race on June 27, 2021. The new SUVs will tow the racecars competing in the Race to the Clouds in Colorado, USA.

The new MDX is the marque’s first crossover SUV to get a powerful Type S modification. The manufacturer announced it when it presented the standard MDX model late last year, but has kept quiet about details until now.

Judging by the freshly revealed photos, the Type S boasts its own bumpers, a radiator grille with a fine cellular mesh, black body décor instead of chrome, 21-inch wheels, and quad exhaust tips instead of standard rectangular ones. The interior remains to be exposed, but we know on official terms that there are three seat rows.

Power comes from the same 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 as the one used by the TLX Type S, rated at 360 PS (355 hp / 265 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. The ten-speed automatic transmission and SH-AWD system featuring individual clutches on the rear wheels carries over from the standard SUV, but benefits from certain tweaks. The hardcore Sport+ drive mode is also different, Acura says.

The entry spec will ship with dual-wishbone suspension at the front end instead of McPherson struts, while the top spec will benefit from chassis design improvements. Four-piston Brembo brakes at the front will provide adequate deceleration.

Other details will be revealed closer to the launch, which is planned for this autumn.
