The YouTube team of Waterjet Channel decided to see if they could find what makes the Bugatti Chiron wheel special enough to cost $25,000. They sawed the thing with a clear cut and had a good, close look at the internals.
Long story short, the wheel proved rather normal and not in any way exceptional, expect maybe for a couple of less conventional design decisions. One is a special trim piece on the external rim meant to minimize damage in the event of a flat tire. The other one is the way the tire itself is mounted on the rim – it appears glued tightly to it. Given the crazy accelerations the Chiron is capable of, neither is surprising or unexpected.
It is also worth pointing out that the French hypercar has unique maintenance and service requirements regarding its tires. Among other things, the company urges owners to replace the rubber at least once every five years regardless of actual wear. One wheel set is designed to last only as long as two tire sets, so if you find yourself in need of a third tire set, make sure to grab new wheels along with it as well. The full package will set you back at least $140,000, but hey, what is money when safety is at stake, right?
