The original Chevrolet Corvair from the 1960s has an elegance and a presence that the bulky cars of today cannot fully replicate, but French aftermarket company NewRide has attempted to come close with its project titled ‘Corvair 2020’.
The starting point was a 2018 Chevy Camaro, which received a retro-themed carbon-fiber exterior, a redesigned roof and a pair of Dodge Challenger Hellcat headlight units doubling as air intakes, because the radiator grille isn’t there. The thing is, the original Corvair had its engine in the back, while the replica retains its 6.2-liter V8 at the front end, and it needs at least some fresh air that the new grille stub cannot deliver.
A carbon-fiber steering wheel is probably the main highlight inside, where everything else stays largely the same. The drivetrain is also stock. Heading into 2023, NewRide plans to start producing such retromods in California with three body styles to choose from including coupe, convertible and sports estate.
