Czech Republic greenlights self-driving bus tests on public roads

UK-based autonomous transports company Aurrigo has unleashed its futuristic-looking bus called Auto-Shuttle on the streets of Prague and Brno, Czech Republic. The ultimate goal is perfecting the technology for commercial use, reports Sustainable Bus.

Aurrigo has been testing its Auto-Shuttle fleet in Great Britain for some time now, but, according to representatives, it helps a great deal to have multiple driverless buses cruising streets in completely different regions and conditions. The narrow, almost medieval streets of Prague are much unlike the roads of Milton Keynes in the UK, where the first tests took place.

The bus rolling around in Prague has a human operator/controller in the driver’s seat, ready to overtake the controls in emergencies. Fully autonomous tests are in the plans, too, but the buses will always be remotely supervised by human operators. At the same time, Aurrigo plans to host a number of events for the prospective passengers of this innovative type of transports, hoping to raise the public awareness and trust towards the emerging technology.

Auto-Shuttle uses a LiDAR and a host of other sensors to get around, as well as proprietary software developed by Aurrigo. A high educational institution in London is said to assist the company in implementing the project. Other details are scarce at the moment; all we know is that every shuttle is designed for up to 10 passengers.
