Genesis GV80 boasts world’s first glasses-free 3D dashboard

According to Genesis, the GV80 SUV is the first production car on record to feature a dashboard with a 3D effect that is visible without any accessories, such as 3D goggles.

Co-developed with Continental, the 3D tech comes based on the parallax principle: the dash screen displays two images at once slightly displaced in relation to each other, which results in the left and the right eye seeing different images. A special camera tracks the driver’s eye movements to ensure proper alignment of the images all the time. The same camera is used in the drowsiness alert system.

The next-generation 3D dash will combine all front row displays into one, the manufacturer claims. The driver will be able to arrange the various frames and gadgets on the screen to get things like the odometer, the navigation map, etc. where they most need them.

For its part, Continental reports that it is working on a similar display tech for the passengers. Once released, the display will enable rear row passengers to watch stereoscopic movies, play Augmented Reality games, and shop online in an immersive way never experienced before.
