Honda ushers in an unusual electric SUV

Honda used this year’s Japan Mobility Show as an opportunity to unveil the 0 α (“Zero Alpha”). It is a crossover prototype that the company plans to approve into production in two years’ time, offering it worldwide.

The vehicle sports a rather unusually geometric front end, a shoulder line that rises towards the back and a bulky, boxy rear end adorned with an oversized diffuser. Overall, it looks similar to the Honda 0 SUV Concept unveiled in the United States a while ago. The company says that both are eventually envisioned as parts of its zero-emission “Honda 0” lineup, but the Zero Alpha will be smaller and the most affordable of the bunch.

It's too early to discuss the technical details, but the automaker claims it used an innovative, ultra-thin battery to achieve a perfectly level floor and as much interior space as possible in a compact. The bigger 0 SUV and 0 Saloon models are being designed on the same platform as Sony’s Afeela EV, so we’d expect at least 483 km (300 miles) of range per charge.
