Hyundai shows an automatic ‘police call’ feature for suspected crime attempts

Hyundai Motor Company has published the results of a new Festival of Ideas, which the company has been hosting annually for its employees since 2010. The winners list included a team that designed H-SOS, a safety system capable of detecting life-threatening emergencies and crime attempts and automatically contacting law enforcement.

According to the description, the system comprises a number of microphones and a special software suite capable of recognizing the sounds of human screams and explosions. In this event, the car automatically turns on the headlights, blares the alarm, and begins filming the are around it on cameras. The footage is then sent to the law enforcement authorities along with the geolocation of the car.

Additionally, all owners of Hyundai cars will receive a warning message if a natural disaster or a major crime happens in the vicinity.

Hyundai has not confirmed yet whether the H-SOS feature will ever be implemented in actual mass-produced cars. Still, multiple features previewed at the Festival of Ideas in the past years have already found practical applications, so it is possible.
