Hyundai i30 gets tangled in a rebadging game in Australia

Hyundai has debuted its facelifted i30 hatchback in Australia and introduced an “i30 Sedan” alongside it, but do not be surprised if you are seeing an Elantra instead.

The i30 Sedan looks identical to the international Elantra model and comes powered by the same assortment of engines as the normal i30. The only exception is that its 1.6-liter turbo variant supports six-speed M/T, something that the hatchback does not.

Moving back to the 2021 Hyundai i30 Hatchback, its Australia spec is markedly different from the Czech-produced Europe version available since May. On the outside, the bumpers and the grille look the same, but the headlight contents are different and the DRLs are roughly triangular. The sported-up N Line remains true to its original appearance, and we won’t know much about the i30 N performance line until it premieres in 2021. What we do know is that all Australia-sold cars are imported from South Korea.

Engine-wise, the 1.6-liter turbo diesel worth 136 PS (100 kW) is no longer available, only leaving gasoline four-cylinders to choose from. There is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine rated at 163 PS (120 kW) which you can grab with a six-speed manual and automatic transmission, and a 1.6-liter supercharged mill good for 204 PS (150 kW). The latter is only obtainable with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and only in the N Line trim.
