Mazda MX-5 gains new supercharger options

British tuner BBR has launched two new supercharger kits for the 2015-2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata lineup. The two-liter engine can be persuaded to output 228 or even 250 metric horsepower instead of the standard 157.

The core of the modification is a new Rotrex supercharger, a compact unit that slots into the engine bay right in front of the engine itself and doesn’t require permanent modification of the car. According to the tuner, even less experienced drivers can install the upgrade on their own. Once applied, the engine churns out 228 PS (225 hp / 168 kW) and takes the small roadster from zero to 60 miles per hour (96.6 km/h) in 5.3 seconds – full two seconds faster than stock.

The Stage II of the tuning adds a stainless-steel exhaust manifold along with a sports cat and other minor upgrades, shaving a further 0.2s off the sprint time.

The first package comes in at £3,895 and the second one at £5,395. Both prices are quoted for the hardware alone. Tweaked ECU software is available at a ~£600 premium for both packages, further improving the results.

According to BBR, a similar upgrade will soon go on sale for the latest Miata packing a 184-PS (181-hp / 136-kW) engine.
