Mercedes-Benz kid car sells for a real car price

A scale replica of the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR (see video) found a new owner in Abu Dhabi, UAE this weekend. The winning bidder paid U.S. $17,250.

The origin of the kid car is unclear. The specifications in the listing suggest that it was made by Junior Dreamcars, a Netherlands-based company that used a stainless-steel chassis and plastic bodywork to imitate the legendary racer from the 1950s. The replica is 1,860 mm (72.66 in) long and features an interior trimmed with leather and fabric.

The equipment list also mentions 12-inch wheels, a see-through visor instead of a full-size windshield, an imitation dashboard, an opening hood cover and functional lights all around. A 50cc, two-stroke petrol engine under the hood is enough for a peak acceleration of 30 km/h (18.6 miles per hour). The replica is suitable for children 5 to 9 years old.
