Unique street-legal Mercedes-Benz racer goes on sale

The Mercedes-Benz CLK LM seen here is a version of the legendary CLK GTR designed a quarter of a century ago for long endurance races. Only four such cars were made, and this example was the only one to be converted into a road-legal car in 2021.

The price is not specified, but it is worth mentioning that even the standard and more common CLK GTR for the road can cost between $5–10 million, so this one could easily fetch several millions.

The Stuttgart-based automaker built the original CLK GTR for FIA GT racing, but later came up with a modified version for long-drawn endurance races like the 24 Hours of the Le Mans. The supercar debuted with a revised aerodynamic kit optimized for Circuit de la Sarthe and traded its stock V12 for a more reliable and long-lived V8 rated at 612 PS (603 hp / 450 kW). The original CLK GTR had about the same horsepower.

Both cars that hit the Le Mans track in 1998 ended up leaving it due to mechanical issues. However, they then proceeded to compete in the FIA GT and scored a double victory in a whopping six races, bringing Mercedes a champion’s title.

The example on sale right now has never taken part in races, however, due to its status of prototype test car. Once the season of 1998 was over, a private buyer from Japan acquired it and kept in his collection until 2013. The car then traveled to France and wound up in Great Britain in 2017, where it currently resides. The new owner made it street-legal and is now selling it to the highest bidder.
