Mercedes brings extra cylinders back into the GLC 53 AMG

The latest Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4Matic+ SUV and Coupe can now be obtained with a mild-hybrid powertrain rated at 449 PS (443 hp / 330 kW). Based on a six-cylinder engine, it takes the car from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds.

The powertrain features a traditional turbocharger working alongside an electric supercharger to eliminate turbo lag and improve performance at lower rev counts. The torque normally is capped at 600 Nm (443 lb-ft), but you can temporarily boost it to 640 Nm (472 lb-ft). A starter-generator built into the standard nine-speed automatic transmission adds another 23 PS (23 hp / 17 kW) along with 205 Nm (151 lb-ft).

As usual, customers can opt for the AMG Driver’s Package to lift the speed limiter from its standard 250 km/h (155 mph) to 270 km/h (167 mph). Those looking for a stiffer, sportier ride character can get the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, and those who appreciate having adjustable sound in their SUV will like AMG Real Performance Sound.

A few days ago, Mercedes admitted that putting four-cylinder engines in AMG cars was a mistake regardless of their quality. As such, the GLC lineup will default to I6 from now on.
