Ultra-rare Mitsubishi Lancer Evo heads to auction

A low-mileage Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution believed to be the rarest Evo model ever created will cross the auction block in late February. It is a sixth-gen Tommi Makinen Edition with Monte Carlo package installed. Only five such cars were made, and this one is the last of the batch.

The car has 5,600 km (3,480 miles) on it despite being 22 years old. The Tommi Makinen Edition (TME) was launched in honor of Mitsubishi’s award-winning rally driver in 1999. Compared to the standard Evo VI, it had lowered suspension, modified steering and overhauled internals – turbochargers, exhaust and calibration have all been revised. All TME cars also had a distinct front bumper and unique 17-inch wheels to tell them from stock.

The Monte Carlo batch was based on the Evo VI TME and celebrated Makinen’s third victory at the namesake rally. It received a further engine boost from Ralliart UK, Eibach springs for even sharper handling, revised gar ratios and a rally-spec front differential. Inside, Recaro SR seats were the biggest addition. The company had planned to produce 12 such vehicles, but stopped at 5.

The output of the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine was officially rated at 280 PS (276 hp / 206 kW), but it is widely believed that the actual output was much greater.

The estimated selling price lies between £100,000 and £120,000 (U.S. $127,500–153,000).
